Overview

The collection contains a photocopy of a typed transcription of Ms. Balster's oral account of the events leading up to the battle at Sand Creek and the subsequent investigations by the government. Included are photocopies of pictures of Bent's Fort, William Bent, a "100 Day Volunteer" recruiting poster, Col. John M. Chivington, an oil painting, "The Battle of Sand Creek," by Robert Lindneux, a Cheyenne brave and a map of The Plains, 1850-1860.

History of Bent's Fort and the Sand Creek Massacre

The Sand Creek Massacre occurred on November 29, 1864, along the banks of the Sand Creek, near present day Chivington, Colorado. Involved were 100-day volunteer Federal troops under the command of Colonel J.M. Chivington and Cheyene Indians camped at Bent's Fort.

The collection contains a photocopy of a typed transcription of Ms. Balster's recording, Included are photocopies of pictures of Bent's Fort, William Bent, a "100 Day Volunteer" recruiting poster, Col. John M. Chivington, an oil painting, "The Battle of Sand Creek," by Robert Lindneux, a Cheyenne brave and a map of The Plains, 1850-1860.

Under a grant from the Youthgrants in the Humanities Program of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Ms. Balster has prepared an oral account of the events leading up to the battle at Sand Creek and the subsequent investigations by the government. In her presentation, Ms. Balster also explores some of the reasons for and myth associated with. the massacre, but encourages the listener to draw their own conclusions about the battle.
