History of Les Novelettes Club
Les Novelettes Club of Leavenworth, Kansas was founded on 30 June 1950 as a women's civic and social club. The club was established to provide scholarships for young African Americans wishing to pursue a college education; to promote social activities, especially for young women of the community; and to provide charitable aid. The club has supported these goals by holding fundraisers and providing a scholarship known as the "Les Novelettes Helen Jackson Brown Scholarship."
Les Novelettes has met monthly, maintaining a restricted membership of no more than twenty women. Les Novelettes is a member of several community organizations, including the Carnegie Art Center in Leavenworth, the Leavenworth chapter of the NAACP, and the Leavenworth Afro-American Historical Society.

Scope and Contents
The Papers of Les Novelettes Club date from 1950 to 1998 and are separated into three series: Correspondence, Leavenworth Afro-American Historical Society, and Organization and Activity Records. Folder arrangement within each series is generally alphabetical by topic, with chronological arrangement of items within each folder. Correspondence chiefly includes letters of thanks from other organizations and from scholarship recipients, with letters of response from club officers. The Leavenworth Afro-American Historical Society series consists of materials regarding Society activities, membership, and governance. The Organization and Activity Records, the largest series within the collection, contains materials regarding the club's governance and records and mementos from various activities.
