Biography of the Mitchell Family and Herbert C. Barker
Mitchell Family
Herbert H. Mitchell was born 29 May 1916 in Lawrence, Kansas to John R. and Ophelia (Hopkins) Mitchell. After graduating from Lawrence Memorial High School in 1935, Mitchell attended The University of Kansas, where he majored in art and belonged to Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. Mitchell left KU after only three years to join the Army; stationed at Guadalcanal, he fought in the Pacific theater of World War II. After the War, Mitchell worked as a laborer in Lawrence. He died 16 March 2003.
Mitchell's mother, Ophelia, taught in Lawrence public schools, including Lincoln School. An active community member, she belonged to the Self Culture Club and the Ninth Street Baptist Church.
Herbert Charles Barker
Herbert Charles Barker was born in 1909 in Lawrence, Kansas. He worked as General Passenger Agent for the Bureau of Railway Information, a non-profit organization dedicated to generating interest in trains and travel. During World War II, he served as a Sergeant in the Army.

The Mitchell Family and Herbert C. Barker papers date from 1904 to 1973 and are arranged in two series: Mitchell Family Papers and Herbert C. Barker Papers. Mitchell Family Papers consist mainly of correspondence and various items relating to the Self Culture Club. Barker's papers consist of correspondence, primarily related to his work with the Bureau of Railway Information. Folder arrangement is alphabetical within each series.
Photographs from the collection are located at RH MS-P 805. It is believed that the majority were taken by Herbert C. Barker. Those that appear to be specifically from the Mitchell Family are grouped together and noted as such.
