History of the Kansas Authors Club
The Kansas Authors Club was organized in Topeka, Kan. in 1903, adopting the organizational name Kansas Authors' Club in early 1904 (the apostrophe was dropped in the 1920s). Initially the organization met solely in Topeka but by early 1905 the group broadened its participation to membership outside that city. Early members included Eugene Ware (honorary member), who used the pen-name "Ironquill"; Thomas E. Dewey; Judge John Martin; Margaret McCarter; Albert T. Reid; Arthur Capper; and Mrs. H. O. Garvey, amongst others.
In 1913 the club incorporated as a nonprofit organization, by that time having 100 members. By its 25th anniversary in 1929 the club had 400 members.
The club has been organized into seven or eight districts, following the Kansas congressional districts, and the state organization meets once a year. The state meeting has grown to include workshops in addition to panels, an awards banquet and ceremonies, and board meeting.
Over the years the organization has held contests and awarded prizes for best fiction and other literary endeavors. These contests have been open to KAC members, high school students and younger authors, and other groups including all citizens of Kansas. Individual districts also hold literary contests.
The Kansas Authors Club continues to serve as a resource for its members in developing their writing skills and sharing experiences.
