History of the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893

Treaties between the Cherokee Nation and the United States government in 1828 and 1835 guaranteed land would remain in the Cherokees' control for hunting grounds in what is now the state of Oklahoma. After the Civil War, these treaties were revisited. Pressure from potential Euro-American settlers further reduced these lands. In the late 19th century Congress purchased the 6 million acres, and September 16, 1893 became the day for opening the land for settlement.

Those interested in making the "run" for one of the 42,000 claims available had to stand in line and register, paying a fee. One of the major registration points was Arkansas City, Cowley County, Kansas, across the border from the new territory. Arkansas City had been opened for settlement in 1870 on land that had belonged to the Osage tribe.
