History of Vinland, Kansas

Vinland, Douglas County, Kansas, settled in 1854 soon after the Kansas-Nebraska territory opened to Euro-American settlement, was the center of bloody confrontations that helped perpetuate the Civil War. The Coal Creek Boys were a group of volunteers from the area that helped protect property from pro-slavery Missouri-based raiders before and during the war. They played a part in the Battle of Black Jack.

After the Civil War, and due to a new influx of settlers coming to the area with the arrival of the railroad, the Stony Point, Harmony, and Vinland schools were constructed, in addition to a post office and public library. The community reached its peak population in the 1920s.
