Overview

This collection includes scrapbooks, photographs, letters, geneology information, and financial materials belonging to the White family, extending from the mid-19th through the 20th centuries, an African American family who lived in Lawrence and Leavenworth, Kansas. Also included are materials regarding Leavenworth Public Schools and the Zion Baptist Church in Kansas. The photographs date back to the 1870s and include many members of both the White and the Johnson families, along with photographs of groups and church events.

History of the Johnson and White families

This collection represents the White family, historically from Lawrence, Kansas and Los Angeles, California. Focusing on Marilyn Elaine White, born in 1944 in Los Angeles, this collection includes geneological information for both her paternal and maternal lines.

Her paternal grandfather, George Paris White, married the adopted Sarah Ella Thompson, later Ella Sarah Johnson, in 1899. She was a school teacher and active participant in the Leavenworth County School system in Leavenworth, Kansas. Their son and Marilyn's father, Ela Nelson White, was born in Lawrence, Kansas in 1902 and married Mary Laurenza Susan Johnson in 1943 in Los Angeles.

Marilyn White's maternal grandparents, Julius Ceasar Johnson and Coralee Aga Jacques, married in 1903 in Kansas City. Their daughter Mary, Marilyn White's mother, was born in 1912.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains one box of family papers that span geneological information, school administration records, correspondence, and various financial documents, all of which are ordered by record type. Oversize materials have been physically separated and are located at RH MS Q382.

The photographic material contains images of mostly family members of both the paternal and maternal relatives of Marilyn White. There are also photographs of miscellaneous group and church events, interior shots, and unidentified persons.
