Overview

Two letters written by Reverend L.A. Alderson from Atchison, Kansas to his niece Jane Remley in Iowa City, Iowa. The letters, written in March and April 1875, recount Alderson's and his wife's health, as well as discussing the religion of various family members, including his niece's husband.

Biography of Lewis Allen Alderson

Reverend Lewis Allen Alderson was born in Greenbriar County, West Virginia on May 5th, 1812. He attended Ohio Universiisty, graduating in 1832 with high honors, later marrying a woman named Eliza.

Alderson moved to Atchison, Kansas in 1858 and gave the first Baptist sermon in the city. He preached for three years taking no pay. Additionally he operated a number of businesses in the town, including an insurance agency and a bookstore.

Lewis Allen Alderson died and was buried in Atchison in May of 1881.
