Overview
This collection consists of two versions of the Kansas State Seal, one made of wood and one made of copper. The copper seal includes a note describing the origins of the state seal and of this particular metal copy.

History of the Kansas State Seal
The state seal adopted by Kansas consists of an image of a farmer plowing fields, a river with a steamboat, Native Americans pursuing buffalo, and a prairie landscape, with the state motto of "Ad astra per aspera" (To the Stars Through Difficulty). This seal was adopted in May 1861, soon after Kansas becameing a state, modified from a design submitted by State Senator John J. Ingalls of Atchison.
