Biography of Joyce Castle

Joyce Castle is a Mezzo Soprano singer who grew up in Baldwin City, Douglas County, Kansas and studied at the University of Kansas and the Eastman School of Music. She made her professional opera debut in 1970 at the San Francisco Opera and continued to have an active opera career, performing at the Houston Grand Opera, the Metropoliton Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, and Glimmerglass Opera. She was a leading artist with both the New York City Opera and the New York Metropolitan Opera, in shows including Sweeney Todd and Leonard Bernstein's Candide.

Castle has worked closely with Jake Heggie and William Bolcom, both of whom have written pieces for her throughout the years. Later in her career, Castle returned to the University of Kansas to teach in the Department of Music and Dance. She has also directed and sung in Strawberry Fields, which was performed at KU with KU students.
