History of Curragh Army Camp

Camp Curragh in County Kildare, Ireland was established after the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854, when the British Army recognized its need for additional training areas.

Initially a temporary camp, in the 1860s Parliament passed legislation to gain permanent control over the land and manage public and private rights of way and other land usages.

In May 1922 the British Army removed from the camp, turning control over to the Irish Free State Army. The camp was used as an internment and military detention center between the 1920s and 1950s. Detainees often called Camp Curragh "Tintown."

The camp is currently home to the Defence Forces Training Center for the Irish Defence Forces.
