Overview

This collection includes correspondence and recordings of interviews with Irish writers, and additional paper materials related to interviews with the writers. The materials were compiled by Dr. Frank Kernsnowski, an English Professor and Irish studies scholar who earned his doctorate at the University of Kansas, and retired from Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas. Also included are enclosures removed from Kersnowski's book collection of Irish literature.

Audiovisual materials are stored in the KU Annex off-site storage area. All researchers interested in reviewing this material must consult Spencer Research Library Public Services staff (785-864-4334 or ksrlref@ku.edu, 9-5 M-F CST) before a planned visits; staff will respond within three days, though materials may not be available in that timeframe. Access to audio visual materials may require digitization first. Be advised that drop-in requests for this material cannot be accommodated.

Biography of Frank Kersnowski (1934-)

Frank L. Kersnowski was born in 1934 in Washington, D.C. and was educated at the University of Tennessee (B.A. 1957, M.A. 1959) and the University of Kansas (Ph.D. 1963). In 1962 he began teaching at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. After two years there, he spent the remainder of his career at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where he attained the rank of professor of English in 1974.

Kersnowski concentrated his research on 20th century Irish and English writers and their works. His book publications include The Outsiders: Poets of Contemporary Ireland (1975), A Bibliography of Modern Irish and Anglo-Irish Literature (1976, with C. W. Spinks and Laird Loomis), and The Early Poetry of Robert Graves: The Goddess Beckons (2002), as well as the edited volumes Conversations with Robert Graves (1989), Into the Labyrinth: Essays on the Art of Lawrence Durrell (1989), and Conversations with Henry Miller (1994, with Alice Hughes).

Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of Dr. Frank Kersnowski's correspondence and recordings (cassette tapes and compact discs) of interviews with Irish writers, as well as some additional paper materials related to the interviews with writers. Also included are enclosures removed from a large book collection of Irish literature donated to Spencer Research Library by Dr. Kersnowski at the same time as the manuscript materials. Each removed item has been foldered with a bibliographic record noting Spencer's call number for the volume from which it was removed.
