Overview

This collection contains Frank T. Shute's diary from 1879 to 1881. He details his family's life from Omaha, Nebraska to Highland Township in Jewell County, Kansas. The diary includes names of relatives living in the Shute household, as well as those living nearby. Shute also includes an inventory of his personal property and real estate, lists of payments and receipts, notes the weather and condition of crops. Also included in the collection is an 1876 letter regarding a homestead filing from Frank's father, Thomas Shute.

Biography of Frank T. Shute

Frank T. Shute was born February 1859 at Plymouth, Grafton County, New Hampshire. His parents, Thomas and Mary Ann (Emerson) Shute had four other children. Augusta Sherburn, Ebenezer, Celestia Johnson, and Elsietta. Frank mentions several of his siblings, as well as his cousin George in his diary. Celestia died June 2, 1862. The Shute family emigrated from Plymouth, New Hampshire to Omaha, Nebraska in 1872 and were living in Kansas by 1875. During the time of Frank's diary he lived in his parent's household in Highland Township in Jewell County, Kansas.
