Overview

This collection includes records of the Douglas County Genealogical Society in Kansas dating from its founding in 1975 to the early 2000s. The collection includes meeting minutes, financial records and treasurer's reports, and other administrative records for the organization. There are also a number of the organization's quarterly newsletters, "The Pioneer," including a small history of their logo and information on the numerous workshops and seminars they have held in Lawrence, KansasS.

History of the Douglas County Genealogical Society

The Douglas County Genealogical Society (Dcgs) was formed in the fall of 1975 by a group of Lawrence, Kansas locals who felt they could be more successful researching and studying their family histories in a group through mutually providing assistance. The goal of the society was to form a common library of basic genealogical books and to sponser workshops and lectures of various topics that related to family history research. The Society created a newsletter called "The Pioneer" that helped inform all of their members on articles and upcoming events.

The majority of this collection focuses on the contents of meetings the Genealogical Society held, as well as the formation and writings of "The Pioneer," their newsletter. This also includes information on workshops and seminars Dcgs held around the Douglas County, KansasS area. The collection includes records related to the newsletter; membership documentation of the society; financial records; information about workshops and seminars held by the society; meeting minutes; board member and bylaw information; and correspondence, among other related records.
