History of Stanley, Kansas
The unincorporated settlement site of Stanley, three miles west of the Missouri border, was part of land owned by the Shawnee Native American tribe after an 1854 treaty with the United States. By 1879 the tribe was officially relocated to Oklahoma, though Euro-American settlers had already begun settling on the land.
Stanley was named for Sir Henry Morton Stanley in 1871 and by 1872 was on a branch of the Kansas City, Clinton, and Springfield rail line. Most early settlers were farmers.
Stanley Rural High School opened in 1920; in 1965 when many rural schools were consolidating in Kansas, Stanley's and Stilwell's schools became Southeast Johnson County Unified School District #229 (later Blue Valley School District).
Beginning in the early 1970s, Overland Park attempted to annex Stanley. Community members formed the Johnson County Rural Community Association and sued. However, by 1985 Overland Park had absorbed the community.
