Biography of John Fowler
John Fowler was born in Florence, Missouri in 1938 and later moved to Lawrence, Kansas with his wife and children in the 1960s. He and wife Sara operated Abington Book Shop in Lawrence and published and edited GRIST magazine until later moving to New York City, NY, in the 1990s, where Fowler published GRIST-ON-LINE. The original paper magazine falls under the mimeo revolution, a style of small-scale and non-commercial publishing using mimeograph reproduction that was particularly popular during the 1960s and 1970s.
Contributors and guest editors who also participated in Fowler's GRIST include William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, David Ignatow, Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg, Jackson Mac Low, David Antin, Carol Bergé, William Wantling, Barbara Holland, Douglas Blazek, Judson Crews, Irene Schram, Jon Gierlich, S. Clay Wilson, Lee Chapman, JoAnne Wycoff, Barbara Moraff, Jim McCrary, Charley Plymell, Roxie Powell, Robert Branaman, Claude Pélieu, Mary Beach, Glenn Todd, George Kimball, Robert Creeley, Bergé, Ted Berrigan, Paul Blackburn, Ishmael Reed, Diane Wakoski, Hunter S Thompson, Joanne Kyger, Bill Berkowitz, and Carl Weissner, amongst others.
