Biography of John Fowler

John Fowler was born in Florence, Missouri in 1938 and later moved to Lawrence, Kansas with his wife and children in the 1960s. He and wife Sara operated Abington Book Shop in Lawrence near the University of Kansas campus and published and edited Grist magazine. The store acted as a place of congregation for activists, academics, and literary types, as well as visitors from within and outside of Lawrence. The Fowlers later moved to New York City, Ny, in the 1990s, where Fowler published Grist-On-Line. The original paper magazine falls under the mimeo revolution, a style of small-scale and non-commercial publishing using mimeograph reproduction that was particularly popular during the 1960s and 1970s. Fowler started Grist in 1964 with issue #2. The last issue, #14 (#13 was also not produced), was finished in 1967.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged in two series, Manuscripts and draft materials submitted for Grist and Correspondence. Envelopes in which the collection was originally sent to Spencer Research Library have been maintained and are located in box 3. The first box in the collection contains the manuscript and draft materials from issues #2-12 and #14 (issues 1 and 13 were never published). Correspondence has been alphabetized by last name; when individuals sent few items, they have been grouped in box 2. Senders have individual folders if they sent four or more documents and are located in box 4. This includes folders of correspondence to and from Charles Plymell and George Kimball, who guest edited issues of Grist. Some individuals sent poems or other items rather than or in addition to letters; these items have remained with the correspondence. When sender is unknown, these items have been placed in a "sender unknown" folder.
