History of Martha and Mary's Way

Martha and Mary's Way was founded as an interfaith network for women. The organization held seminars, festivals and other programs and events to help women with their spirituality and presence in the community. Some projects organized by the group included The Faith Club and Femme Fest.

On August 13th, 2006 the group changed its name to Womanspirit Connection in order to be more inclusive of women in differing faiths. The organization was initially based in Lawrence, Kansas but eventually moved to a 42 acre plot of land south of Lawrence still in Douglas County, near Vinland.

The original director of Martha and Mary's Way was Mildred Eileen McGrath, who was given the name Sister Irene. Sister Irene died on April 8th, 2013. In 2008, the board members included Rev. Vicki Penner (Chair), Elizabeth Miller (Co - treasurer), Rev. Angela Lowe, Stephanie Krehbiel (Listserv manager), Asra Haq (Communications), Hamideh Gerami (Co -treasurer), Joan Ring (Secretary), Julie Trowbridge-Alford, and Danielle Price. The organization disbanded around 2014.
