History of the Old Lawrence Windmill

This windmill, constucted in a Dutch sytle, was built in 1863 in Lawrence, Kansas by business partners John Wilder and Andrew Palmquist. The mill received some damage during William Quantrill's August 1863 raid of the city but was repaired and completed in 1864. The 4-story, octagon-shaped windmill functioned until around 1885 only for a fire to destroy it in 1905.

This modern recreation of an illistration was originally done by George J. Hood, an engineering graduate of the University of Kansas in the early 20th century. He went on to work at firms in Kansas City and release a book of engineering illustrations.
