Biography of Ernst Ulmer
Ernst Ulmer was born in Kansas City in 1922, part of a family of immigrant German grocers. He served in World War II before attending the Kansas City Art Institute and graduating with a MFA in 1950.
Ulmer worked as a technical illustrator for the aircraft industry and for architectural firms before devoting himself full-time to the fine arts beginning in the late 1970s. Ulmer's work has appeared in many national publications, including Sports Illustrated, U.S. News and World Report, and Time magazine. He was a talented artist, known for his murals, and worked in several mediums, including watercolors, oils, and pastels, as well as sculpture. In 2006 Governor Kathleen Sebelius named him Kansas Artist of the Year.
Ulmer married Mary Malloy, his high school sweetheart, with whom he had four children: Connie, Kurt, Dan, and Steve. In June of 2009, Ernst Ulmer passed away.
