Francisco María Nuñez Monge was born in Desamparados, Costa Rica in July 1892. He began working as a journalist in 1911 when he was still a teenager. He was self-taught in his career, since he had to leave high school at the age of 18.

At the age of 25, in 1917, Monge published his first significant book, Mi Tierra Nativa, a historical and geographical study of the town of Desamparados. As a journalist, he received the Maria Moors Cabot Award from Columbia University and the García Monge Journalist Award.

After 43 years at the Diario de Costa Rica, Monge stopped working as a journalist. In 1964, he became head of the Library of the National Bank of Costa Rican. He died in March 12, 1984.
