Biography of Clyde L. Bysom

Clyde Leon Bysom was born October 13, 1917, in Adrian, Missouri, the son of Walton and Edna Bysom. He graduated and attended Lawrence High School and the University of Kansas, both in Lawrence, Kansas. Bysom was a tailgunner in a B-29 in the Pacific Theater during World War II, serving under the command of Colonel Paul Tibbets, Jr.

After the war, Bysom returned to Lawrence and was a member of many different jazz bands, including the Lawrence City Band, New Horizons, and KU Alumni Band, all of which he helped found. He primarily played saxaphone and clarinet. He helped fund his music passion through working at the Westinghouse Jet Engine Division of Boeing Aircraft and later constructing pipe organs at Reuter Organ Company. He was also in his retirement an instrument repair technician with Hume Music.

Bysom married Pauline Moore in 1943; she passed away in 2012. They had one child, Terry (Bysom) Stringer. Clyde Bysom died June 1, 2015.
