Overview
This collection of 24 large mounted photographs by Kansas photographers R.H. Gandiven and R. Hugoboom were taken between 1883-1884. The photographs depict pioneer families and their homesteads in the following Kansas counties: Clay, Jewell, McPherson, Mitchell, Ottawa, and Saline. Subjects include early pioneer houses and farmsteads, family groups, landscapes, and individual portraits. All but three of the photographs have identifying captions on the reverse side.

Biography of R.H. Gandiven and R. Hugoboom
R. Hugoboom of Clay Center, Clay County, Kansas opened a photography studio with a Mr. or Ms. Gillett on Lincoln Avenue in Clay Center in fall 1884. R. H. Gandiven also appears to have operated a studio in the area at the same time. The images in this collection are labeled as coming from either of the photographers or both.

Box 1 is arranged alphabetically by county and then by folder title, which is based on the subject matter of the image(s). Box 2, which includes images from Jewell County and unidentified images, is arranged alphabetically by folder title.

Processing Information
Post-it notes were attached to some images to provide a second copy of the information that had been recorded on the back of the images. These notes have been transcribed in the finding aid and removed from the back of the relevant images.
