Biography of Ernesto Alvarado García

Ernesto Alvarado García was an attorney, civil servant, historian, and professor. He was born on January 21, 1904 in Tegucigalpa, Copan, Honduras and held several positions in education, as well as serving in the Department of Justice of the Ministry of War and Navy. In 1931, he earned a law degree from the Universidad Central, now the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras. He was appointed consul of Paraguay in Tegucigalpa from 1939-1941. From 1950 through 1953, he was Head of the Biblioteca España, and in 1958 Head of the National Archives of Honduras, where he remained until 1961.

Between 1952 and 1966, Alvarado García was a member of the Geography and History Society of Honduras, as well as member of the Geography and History Society of Guatemala, the Academy of Cuban History, the American Writers and Artists of Cuba, Sociedad de Estudios Internacionales Coloniales (Madrid), and the Sociedad de Abogados de Honduras. García authored several books on history, law, and biography, including La discutida personalidad de don Pedro de Alvarado, y la fundación de San Pedro Sula (1936), Los forjadores de la Honduras colonial, la conquista pacífica de Honduras, héroes y mártires (1938), La odisea de Leoncio Prado en Honduras (1944), and Legislación indigenista de Honduras (1958).

Alvarado García died in his home city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on November 26, 1972.

Scope and Contents

The collection includes personal and professional correspondence, academic curriculum, research documents, speeches, and poems, as well as some financial documents and accounting books, photograph albums and scrapbooks, and some newspaper clippings. The collection concerns García, as well as his family, but provides an incomplete picture of both his professional and personal life.
