Biography of William C. Stevens

William Chase Stevens was born in Illinois in 1861. His family came to Lawrence when he was six years old. He attended Quincy school, Lawrence High School and the University of Kansas, graduating in 1885. Stevens then taught four years at Emporia High School and later at the University of Kansas in 1889 as an assistant in Natural Sciences.

Stevens further studied at Harvard and Woods Hill in 1890 and later earned his MS degree from the University of Kansas in 1893. He became Assistant Professor of Botany in 1894, Professor of Botany and Chairman of the Department of Botany in 1899. He held the Chairmanship until 1931 and retired in 1936.

Scope and Contents

The Personal Papers of W. C. Stevens include correspondence with Ada Pugh, William Chase Stevens, friends, family, and colleagues (including notably Kay and A.J. Mix). Also in the collection are notes, essays and papers with topics focused primarily on botany and religion, booklets about botany and other study, book reviews and newspaper clippings about Stevens' work, newsletters and magazines, photographs of plant life and Stevens' classes, poetry primarily by Esther M. Clark/Esther Clark Hill, artwork, and Stevens' anniversary and birthday pamphlets. There is also a map of the vicinity of Lawrence used for Stevens' work in botany, and a 50 year pin given to Stevens.
