Biography of Ed Sanders

Ed Sanders was born in 1939 and grew up in Blue Springs, Missouri. He studied at the University of Missouri and at New York University, earning a BA in ancient Greek. Sanders remained in New York City after college, opening the Peace Eye Bookstore and starting Fuck You: A Magazine of the Arts in the early 1960s. The magazine included contributions from several Beat Generation poets and artists, including Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso.

Sanders formed the Fugs folk-rock band in 1964 with fellow poet Tuli Kupferberg. The band performed and released several albums in the 1960s, was resurrected in the 1980s-1990s, and released a last album in 2009 before Kupferberg died in 2010.

Sanders' publications include biographical verse, such as Chekhov (1995) and The Poetry and Life of Allen Ginsberg (2000). Sanders' other collections of poetry include Poem from Jail (1963), 20,000 A.D. (1976), Thirsting for Peace in a Raging Century: Selected Poems 1961-1985 (1987), and America: A History in Verse (2000).
