Biography of Anna Jane Michener

Anna Jane Michener, born in 1892 in Anthony, Harper County, Kansas, was an honored member of her community, spending most of her life in Wichita, Kansas. Her deep involvment in several community organizations, including teaching parenting classes and overseeing other teachers for the Family Life Education (staff) and serving with the Southwest Wichita Community Center, Young Womens Christian Association (YWCA), and the Council of Churches, was valued until her death in 1965.

Michener, a Quaker, was a proponent for equal treatment of all people regardless of race or gender, and did work for the rights of others while on the board or committees of organizations including the YWCA, the Interracial Community Committee on Social Action (CCSA), the Faith Housing Association, and the Human Relations Commission of Wichita. She remained an active member in her community throughout her life. At her memorial service, Wichita City Commissioners were present to honor her work to the public.

Anna Jane married John Morrison Michener. Together they had four children who all continue to live in Wichita, Kansas.

Arrangement

Four main themes occur in this collection: personal materials; materials related to civil rights and antidiscrimination; materials related to Quakerism and service through the Quaker community; and records and material related to Michener's family life educational work. Materials have physically been left in the order found at the time of donation but intellectually categorized into these themes. However, materials may overlap in theme, and the whole collection should therefore be consulted when interested in a particular topic. The bulk of the collection relates to Michener's family life and family planning educational work.
