Biographies of Bernard Berenson and Edward A. Bayne
Bernard Berenson, born in Vilnius, Lithuania in 1865, was an American art critic specializing in Italian Renaissance art. He was raised primarily in Boston, Massachusetts and was educated at Harvard University. He spent the majority of his life in Italy, publishing numerous books and essays on art criticism and providing much sought-after advice to international art dealers and collectors. On his death, he left his Florentine villa, I Tatti, as well as its library and art collection, to Harvard University. I Tatti now exists as the Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies.

Edward A. Bayne was a staff member of the American Universities Field Service based in numerous countries throughout the world, including Italy, where he encountered Berenson. Bayne was a political science scholar, specializing particularly in Middle Eastern affairs.
