Biography of John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854)
John Gibson Lockhart was the son of the Reverend Mr. John Lockhart, a Presbyterian minister, and Elizabeth Gibson. He was born in Cambusnethan, Scotland. He studied at the Universities of Glasgow and Oxford, initially settling on a career in law. On April 20, 1820 he married Sophia Charlotte Scott, the eldest daughter of Scottish author Sir Walter Scott of Abbotsford (1771-1832).
Lockhart was a major early contributor to the Edinburgh Monthly Magazine, founded in 1817 (later Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine). Because of his father-in-law's influence, Lockhart later served as editor of the Quarterly Review, from 1825 to 1853, where he wrote a great deal of literary criticism. Lockhart also wrote several novels and biographies, including notably the seven-volume Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott (1837-1838).
