Biography of Erich Maria Remarque (1898-1970)

Erich Maria Remarque, who also used the pseudonym Erich Paul Remark, was born in Osnabrück, Germany. He was drafted into the German Army at the age of 18 during World War I, which experience led to his writing Im Westen Nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front) (1929) and its sequel, Der Weg Zuruck (The Road Back) (1931).

Remarque wrote several other novels. He left Germany for Switzerland in 1932, and his books were banned by the Nazis in 1933. Remarque went to the United States in 1939 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1947. He eventually settled in Switzerland, remaining there until his death in 1970.
