History of State Street Elementary School
State Street Elementary School opened in 1940 at 500 Northeast Sumner Street in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas. Additions were made in 2008 and 2012, doubling the original square footage. Prior to the 1954 Supreme Court decision for Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, State Street admitted only white students.

Biography of Louise Tena Becker (1905-1994)
Louise Tena Becker was born on November 19, 1905 at Washington, Kansas and moved to Topeka in 1936. She taught grade school in Ellsworth County, Lorraine, Solomon, and Topeka and at Emporia State University for 10 summers. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women's group, Mary E. Shannon group, the Group XI of the Business Professional Women, Alpha Deta Kappa honorary teachers sorority, Kansas State Teachers Assocation, National Retired Teachers Assocation, State Retired Teachers Assocation, and Topeka Retired Teachers Assocation. She died on August 21, 1994 at a Topeka nursing center.
