History of Tyburn Gallows

The Tyburn gallows were located near a brook named Tye Bourne, which ran underneath Brook Street (at the junction of current Oxford Street and Park Lane in London, England). The Tyburn hanging tree was a site of execution in England as early as the 12th century, the first recorded execution taking place in 1196. A gallows was erected at the location in the 16th century, built to allow for the hanging of several individual felons at once. Specific days throughout the year were designated for hangings, and these were considered public holidays. These gallows remained in place until 1759, when a moving gallows were erected and the official site of execution moved to Newgate Prison. The site of the Tyburn gallows evolved into the present-day Speakers Corner, located in Hyde Park.
