History of the Little Brown Koko Stories

Little Brown Koko was a popular story character authored by Blanche Seale Hunt in the 1930s until the early 1950s. The stories depicted an African American child and his mother and pets in a stereotyped and caricatured way. The stories appeared in the monthly magazine Household, published by Capper Publications, and were also gathered and published as a series of books. Many of the stories were illustrated by Dorothy Wagstaff, who studied at Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas and taught at the Topeka School of Art in 1938.
