Biography of William H. Fant (1883-1970)

William H. Fant was born in Kentucky in 1883, the son of William Harrison Fant, Sr. (1836-1913) and Katherine Arlington (Ruffner) Fant (1844-1918). The family moved to Garden City, Finney County, Kansas in 1886, during the homestead rush when Garden City was still newly settled by Euro-Americans. Fant remained in the Garden City area the rest of his life as a farmer, raising alfalfa hay, wheat, and maize. He supplemented his farm income by working as county assessor. The family also received some income from business rental property Fant inherited located in Charleston, West Virginia and from stocks Fant's wife Laura inherited from her parents.

Fant married Laura Blanke. They had two children, William Blanke, born in 1917 and died in 1943 as a second lieutentant in World War II, and Joel (Fant) Trout, born in 1923. In 1928, Fant was able to build a two-story brick house with five bedrooms and two baths for the family. William H. Fant, Jr. died in April 1970.

Scope and Contents

The two volumes in the collection record Fant's income and expenses by date in chronological order. Starting on page 113 in the first volume, to the end of the volume, Fant kept miscellaneous notations regarding rent received on the West Virginia property he inherited, stock dividends, sales taxes, and other financial matters. Only the first half of the second volume is used. Loose items found in both volumes have been removed and are housed separately at RH MS P971. These loose items include scratch paper with more financial calculations, notes about a house mortgage and property taxes, incomes taxes, and other additional financial matters.

Names that appear in the ledgers, according to a handwritten list provided by the donor, include Hubert Winget, a partner and sharecropping neighbor; P. Boone, a dairy man who bought hay from Fant; Dr. Williams and Dr. Ross, dentists; R.G. Wachley, a painter; Bullard, an electric shop; F.A.
