History of the Campaign for Economic Democracy

The Campaign for Economic Democracy (CED) was a New Left Political Action Committee (PAC) lead by Tom Hayden. The organization was active in California and focused on progressive issues in the state, including electing leftist members to the statehouse. The CED was used to shift Hayden's public image from a radical leftist to the center so he could win elections and reduce opposition.

THE CED faced controversy after the "Hanoi Jane" incident wherein Jane Fonda, Hayden's wife at the time, posed in front of an enemy anti-aircraft artillery in Hanoi during the Vietnam War. The CED disbanded in 1986 and was replaced by Campaign California using the same staff and headquarters.
