History of the Amalgamated Transit Union
Founded in 1892, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) is a labor union that represents the interests of employees in the public transit industry in the United States and Canada. Through arbitration, strikes, and other job actions, the ATU has advocated for shorter workdays, better working conditions, improved job security, and technological advancements in streets cars, railways, and buses that protected public transit workers.
Today, the ATU has over 200,000 members in over 240 local unions across the United States and Canada. Local 1754 in Lawrence, Kansas is one of only two Kansas-based chapters, the other being Local 1360 in Topeka.
