Scope and Contents

The volume contains several sets of documents detailing transactions over a period of decades, as well as resolutions and confirmations of previous agreements. The documents reflect a 1438 effort by Raoul de Campront, seigneur of Lorey and Campront, to put his legal and financial affairs in order to arrange for the inheritance of his son, as well as to ensure the family retained noble status with the French court. In part, this compilation of documents was probably a reaction to the uncertainties surrounding life in and invasions of Normandy during the Hundred Years' War between England and France, as well as economic difficulties surrounding revenues and landholdings during this era in France. A document from 1544 was apparently added later to the volume and is in a different hand from the other charters.

All items in the volume are copies; some appear to be copies of copies. With the exception of the earliest documents, all were notarized. The documents generally follow a standard pattern: salutation, statement of agreement, guarantees and confirmations, names of witnesses, date, and notice of affixing the seal of the vicomte of the seat where the document was presented.
