Biography of Frank P. MacLennan (1855-1933)
Frank Pitts MacLennan was born in Springfield, Ohio and moved to Emporia, Kansas with his family when he was 15. He graduated from the University of Kansas (KU) with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1875, and received a Master of Science degree, also from KU, in 1877.
MacLennan briefly worked as a harvest hand with a railroad surveying party in Western Kansas and Colorado. He also worked in almost every department of the Emporia Daily News, eventually becoming part owner of the newspaper. In 1885, he bought the Topeka State Journal in an auction, and continued as its editor and publisher until his death in 1933. He also organized the Kansas Reserve State Bank after a campaign to compel Topeka banks to pay higher interest.
Frank MacLennan was married to Anna Goddard of Emporia, who died in 1922. They were parents of a daughter, Mary (Mrs. James A. Farrell). MacLennan later married Madge (Overstreet) Wright. Upon their deaths, MacLennan and his wife gave their mansion to the state of Kansas to be used as the governor's residence. The house is now called Cedar Crest and has been home to Kansas governors since 1962.
