Biography of Mary Ward Smith (1844-1931)

Mary F. Ward was born in 1844 in Zanesville, Ohio, the daughter of Ezra and Elizabeth (Glass) Ward. By 1865 she was in Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas, serving as Ottawa's first schoolteacher. In 1867 she married Horace Jeremiah Smith, with whom she had at least five children. She died in 1931 in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, California.
