Biography of Aleta Jo Petrik Ott (1942-2009)
Aleta Jo Petrik was born in 1942, the daughter of Leo and Marguerite A. (Weien) Petrik. She graduated from Topeka High School in Topeka, Kansas. She received her master's and PhD degrees from the University of Kansas. In 1970, she married Franklyn D. Ott in Beatrice, Nebraska. She studied pteridophytes (ferns) and wrote a reference book, The Pteridophytes of Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota, which was published in 1979.

Biography of Franklyn D. Ott (1935-2011)
Franklyn Dewayne Ott was born in Front Royal, Virginia, the son of Elwood and Helen Viola (Sumption) Ott. He graduated from Clifton Forge High School. He received an Associate Degree of Arts from Ferrum Junior College (Ferrum, Virginia) in 1957 and a joint bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from Lynchburg College in 1964. In 1970, Ott earned a PhD degree from the University of Kansas.
During his long career he worked at several universities and research institutes, including the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, Memphis State University, and Texas A & M University. His research interests focused on algae, especially red algae. He published numerous articles and at least one monograph on red algae.

Scope and Contents
The bulk of this collection is bibliographical index cards created by Ott and Petrik-Ott regarding published works on algae and ferns, mostly arranged by author and/or by subject. Also present are scholarly manuscripts written by Ott regarding algae and by Petrik-Ott regarding ferns. Ott and Petrik-Ott published several articles jointly, which are represented in the article reprints part of this collection.
Several volumes of dried algae and fern specimens were either compiled by Petrik-Ott or acquired later by the Otts.
