Overview

This collection contains general incoming correspondence, greeting cards, and calendars received and compiled by Deborah (Schumann) Harris, an alumna of the University of Kansas Class of 1974. The correspondence documents the personal lives, professional projects, and world travels of Harris's friends and family. The collection also includes papers related to Harris's time at the University of Kansas while residing at Douthart Scholarship Hall, primarily from 1970-1974.

Biography of Deborah Harris (1952- )

Deborah Schumann was born to Howard and LaVonne (Daniels) Schumann in 1952 in Ames, Iowa. In 1970, Deborah Schumann was accepted to the University of Kansas (KU) and lived in the Douthart Scholarship Hall for 3 years. In 1973, she married Delmer D. Harris, another KU student, and in 1974, Deborah Harris graduated from the School of Education. Deborah Harris completed a Master's in History from KU in 1983 and a Masters in Gifted Education from Emporia State University in 2003.

During her professional career, Deborah Harris worked in the Shawnee Mission School District and the Blue Valley School District, as well as as a tax examiner and a Public Information Specialist.

Primary correspondents include members of the Bill and Barb Adams family, the Addis family, the Paul and Debbie Babcock family, the Mary Jo (Patterson) Bingley family, Brotherson family, the Alan and Lorie Bruns family, the Merritt and Wilma Buck family, the Edwin and Diana Cooley family, the Daniels family, Joe and Sandra Detrixhe, Vera and Virgil Dupree, the Steve and Carol Elliott family, the Green family, the Fellows family, Jerry and DeeAnne Harnden, the Nick Judge family, Anne and Gary Koerber, Mary Lapp, LaVerla Lawson, Pat and Barb Maddix, the Ed and Terry Martin family, Anne and Jeff Medlow, Bill and Allene Plant, Elizabeth Parks, the Pat and Beverly Patterson family, the Bill and Nancy Ribbeck family, the Jann and Tom Rudkin family, the Shaffer family, the David and Barbara Stone family, the Terry and Loretta White family, and the Susan (Seidel) and Steve Zawacky family.

A significant amount of correspondence also came from the immediate and extended members of the Schumann family, including Allen Schumann, Chuck and Betty Schumann, and Howard and LaVonne Schumann (Deborah Schumann's parents) and the Harris family, including John and Barbara Harris, daughters Margaret Harris and Katherine (Harris) Parran, Nancy (Harris) and Jeff Spatz, Rozella Harris, Ruth and Delmar F. Harris, and Susan Harris.

The collection also includes papers related to Harris's time residing at Douthart Scholarship Hall and studying at the University of Kansas, including hall policies and guidelines, songs, a Hall constitution from 1969, correspondence, and papers written by Harris from 1973 and 1974.

Arrangement

The collection is organized into three series: Correspondence, Douthart Hall papers, and Calendars. This arrangement is based on groupings provided by Harris when the collection was donated to the Spencer Research Library.
