Biography of Harriet Haskell MacDonald (1864-1944)
Harriet ("Hattie") Bliss Haskell was the eldest daughter of John Gideon (1832-1907) and Mary Elizabeth (Bliss) Haskell (1837-1919). She was born in Hampden County, Massachusetts, but the family moved to Lawrence, Kansas, and her father served in the civil war as quartermaster for various Kansas-based regiments and as chief quartermaster for the Army of the Frontier. After the war, he served as original architect for the Kansas state capitol building and for several other public buildings in Kansas, including the insane aslyums at Topeka and Osawatomie and Snow Hall at the University of Kansas. Haskell's brother, Harriet's uncle, U.S. Congressman Dudley Chase Haskell, was for whom the Haskell Institute (now Haskell Indian Nations University) was named.
Hattie Haskell graduated from Lawrence High School in 1881 and sometime during the 1880s married William MacDonald (1863-1938). She and her sister Mabel Haskell (1866-1937) made many donations to various Lawrence-based institutions, including the public library and the University of Kansas. Hattie Haskell MacDonald died in 1944 and was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence.

The signatories also frequently included their residence or from where they were signing, most often Lawrence, Kansas but also Kansas City, Missouri; Washington, D.C.; Topeka, Kansas; and other locations. There are signatures from signficant local figures in Kansas and Lawrence history, including University of Kansas chancellors and faculty Francis H. Snow, Frank O. Marvin and his wife Elinor, and William H. Carruth. John C. St. John, 8th governor of the state of Kansas, also signed Haskell's autograph book.
