Overview

This collection contains the records of Jerauld "Jerry" Crowell, a founder and longtime board member of the National Baseball Congress (NBC) "Hap" Dumont Youth Baseball league. The majority of the collection comprises records related to Crowell's work in the league and includes anniversary event records, tournament agreements and brackets, team registration paperwork, game memorabilia, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, financial records, correspondence, scorebooks and cards, photographs, newsletters, histories, and records referencing amateur baseball leagues. The collection also includes personal records and correspondence compiled by Crowell.

Biography of Jerauld Crowell (1934-2016)

Jerauld "Jerry" Crowell was born to Max R. Crowell and Viola (Dailey) Crowell in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Working as a letter carrier, Crowell was an active member of the National Association of Letter Carriers for over 50 years. With his professional career, Crowell also had a great love for baseball and served as a baseball coach, team manager, and umpire for many years.

Crowell was one of the founders of the National Baseball Congress (NBC) "Hap" Dumont Youth Baseball league, a youth league established in partnership with the National Baseball Congress in 1974. Originally an organization for participants 12 years and under, the NBC "Hap" Dumont Youth Baseball league, named after NBC founder Raymond "Hap" Dumont, added other youth age divisions between 1989 and 2005. Today the league organizes World Series tournaments for 11 youth age divisions from 8 to 18 years old. NBC "Hap" Dumont Youth Baseball league also hold tournaments at the regional, state, and national level. Crowell served as the National Chairman of the Board of Directors for the league for over 25 years.

Crowell married Carol Collins in 1983. He had 8 children, Jerauld "Jay" Crowell, Gordon Crowell, Vicki Biltz, Rene West, Lisa Marshall, Veronica Crowell, Teresa Melendez, and Greg Crowell. Jerry Crowell passed away on December 5, 2016.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of material representing Crowell's work within the National Baseball Congress (NBC) "Hap" Youth Dumont Baseball league. Collection material includes records concerning the 25th anniversary of the NBC “Hap” Dumont Youth Baseball league, game memorabilia, bids, league by-laws and game regulations, business cards, certificates, forms, meeting minutes and notes, educational material, directories, scorebooks, histories, event photographs, newspaper clippings, financial material, newsletters, and correspondence with various volunteers and baseball organizations associated with the league. The collection also contains registration records and rosters for various teams within the NBC “Hap” Dumont Youth Baseball league, as well as records related to the games and tournaments organized by the league, including state and World Series tournaments for various age divisions.

The collection also contains records referencing other baseball organizations, such as the larger NBC organization, the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC), Kansas Junior Babe Ruth Baseball League, Little Sunflower League, the Guam Amateur Baseball Association (GABA), All-American Amateur Baseball Association (AAAB), Little League Baseball (LL), Front Range Amateur Baseball Association, the USA Baseball Grant program, and the Wichita Wranglers baseball team. The collection also includes personal records and correspondence compiled by Crowell regarding other hobbies and interests, personal compositions, and professional events.

Collection material was arranged into rough alphabetical order by Spencer processing staff based on folder titles and general groupings of the materials when received at the Spencer Research Library. Oversize materials, located at RH MS R497, RH MS R498, and RH MS S76, and audiovisual material, located at KC AV 115, were placed at the end of the collection in their own series for ease of access. Titles for most material were derived from folder titles provided by the donor. In the case of oversize material where titles were unclear, staff derived titles from the names of publications respresented in the folder and designated the created name [in brackets].
