Scope and Contents

The photograph album is full and typically contains multiple prints per page. Most prints are identified with a caption, but the caption may not provide much information to researchers--frequently consisting of initials for the individuals in the print, for example, or what may be in-jokes. Most images are of people, either individuals or in groups, and most photographs were taken outdoors. In some photographs, white people are dressed in Native American or cowboy costume. There are also some photographs including horses, dogs, and other animals; and there are some photographs showing bridges, airplanes, and other human-made objects or scenery.

The photographs were taken in several places around Kansas, including Wichita, Fort Leavenworth, Kingman, Parsons, and McCracken. Photographs were also taken on ranches in Wyoming and Texas, while hunting in Montana, in the Ozarks of Arkansas, in Missouri, on Monterey, California beaches, and of the Atlantic Ocean.

Black indicates in one photograph that he was a sophomore in 1919-1920 but does not provide a school name. There are photographs of people in American Expeditionary Force (A.E.F.) and Navy uniforms dating from World War I. There are also photographs dated from the 1920s and 1930s interspersed throughout the album.

Individuals named in the album include Robert Adair, Beatrice Tabor, Ruth Hays, Hazel Hodges, Ethel Davis, Wyoming Pete and Oklahoma Jim, John Donaldson (jumping over a high hurdle), and a small boy named Ken, among other individuals.
