"A.A.B. Cavaness Poems"
Overview
A.A.B. Cavaness was a Kansan poet who lived in Baldwin City, Douglas County, Kansas. This collection consists of a single folder containing correspondence from Cavaness addressed to Edith M. Clarke (assistant librarian at the University of Kansas), two booklets of poems in honor of President William McKinley, a postmarked envelope, and "Josephine," a booklet containing one poem.

Biography of Alpheus A.B. Cavaness ( -1916)
Alpheus A.B. (A.A.B.) Cavaness was related to James Mulloy (J.M.) Cavaness. He moved to Lawrence, Kansas in 1856 and then to Baldwin City, Kansas in 1859. He joined the First Kansas Battery Light Artillery July 24, 1861 and was discharged September 7, 1864 after sustaining a severe injury during a march near Fort Scott, Kansas.
He attended and taught at Baker University after his military discharge and eventually gifted an athletics field, now known as the A.B. Cavaness Field, to Baker.
Cavaness and J.M. Cavaness together wrote Poems of Two Brothers (1896). A.A.B. became known for his poetry and published Rubiáyát of Hope (1906), a book of poetry. Cavaness died on April 18, 1916 in Baldwin City, Kansas.
