"Discussions by Thomas Ewing 1829-1896"

 Collection — Volume: 1
Call Number: RH MS C94

Overview

This collection consists of a single volume containing various newspaper clippings and pamphlets recounting the speeches of Thomas Ewing, Junior, supporting the Greenback movement. He encourages the federal government to continue printing the greenback currency that it created during the Civil War, rather than returning to specie currency backed by the nation’s variable gold supply. He argues that the gold standard favors the concentration of wealth with those who own capital, the industrialists backing the Republican Party, and disadvantages the farmers and laborers of the Democratic party. The volume also includes a House Resolution and transcripts of testimony before the House Committee on Banking and Currency.

Biography of Thomas Ewing, Jr. (1829-1896)

General Thomas Ewing, Jr. was born in Ohio, the son of Thomas Ewing (1789-1871), who was a United States Senator from Ohio (1830-36), Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of the Interior. Thomas Ewing, Jr. studied law, moved to Kansas in support of the Free-State movement, and opened a firm in Leavenworth, Kansas with his brother-in-law William Tecumseh Sherman.

Ewing was the first Supreme Court Chief Justice in Kansas, but he soon resigned to join the Union Army. As Brigadier General he oversaw the District of the Border between Kansas and Missouri during the border skirmishes and issued the controversial General Order Number 11, which removed all residents from Jackson, Cass, and Bates counties in Missouri in response to Quantrill’s Raid on Lawrence, Kansas in August 1863.

After the Civil War, Ewing returned to Ohio where he lobbied for the Greenback movement and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1876 in the Greenback Wing of the Democratic Party. He died in 1896 after being hit by a cable car in New York City.
