"Four Centuries in Kansas"

 Collection — Volume: 1
Call Number: RH MS E214

Overview

In 1930 several newspapers in Kansas reprinted a manuscript on Kansas history by Bliss Isely as a serial entry in their daily papers. The article was addressed to the schoolteachers of Kansas, who were to bring it to the attention of their students. Isely’s laudatory interpretation of Kansas history includes Native American history, white settlement, and the building of transportation systems. The articles are written from a Eurocentric white male perspective.

Biography of Bliss Isely (1881-1963)

Bliss Isely (1881-1963) was born in Fairview, Kansas, the son of Swiss emigrants. He graduated from Fairmount College, now Wichita State University, and became a fundraiser for the school.

During World War I the United States Food Administration employed him as a publicity director for the state of Kansas, a function he later served for the Wichita Chamber of Commerce. He wrote features for various regional newspapers and several books, including the story of the life of his mother, Elise Isely, on which the two collaborated.
