Biography of Norris Stanley Nahman (1925 - 2019)

Norris Nahman was born on November 9, 1925, in San Francisco, California. He attended Lowell High School before entering into the U.S. Merchant Marines in 1943. Nahman would eventually earn the title of Chief Electrician while with the Merchant Marines, which he left in 1946.

Nahman thereafter received his BS in Electronics Engineering from California State Polytechnic College in 1951, his MS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1952, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas (KU) in 1961. His specialization was in low-temperature high frequency properties of materials, transient analysis of coaxial cables with high frequency losses, and nanosecond transient instrumentation.

Nahman worked at KU as a staff member from 1955 to 1963, then as a Professor of Electrical Engineering from 1963 to 1966. During his time at KU, Nahman worked on Project Jayhawk, a research program specializing in the instrumentation and study of nanosecond phenomenona in electrical devices.

Following his work at KU, Nahman was a scientific consultant to the Radio Standard Laboratory Engineering Division of the National Bureau of Standards; as a professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder; and as Vice President with Picosecond Pulse Labs, Inc., also in Boulder, CO.

Nahman was married to Shirley Darlene, with whom he had four children: Stan, Vicki, Vance, and Scott. Shirley Nahman passed away in 1995. Norris Nahman died September 6, 2019.
