Biography of Martha "Matt" Mueller (1935-2018)

Martha “Matt” Ann Mueller, born and raised in Joplin, Missouri, graduated from the University of Kansas at 19 with a bachelor’s degree in education. As a student she worked in the KU Libraries and then earned her master’s in library science from the Carnegie Institute of Technology.

Mueller taught high school English in Eureka, Kansas, then was a researcher and librarian for a Wall Street firm. She returned to work at the KU Libraries before being hired as a librarian at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, New York, where she worked for 25 years.

Mueller wrote a column in the Alfred Sun, often telling of her world travels on a budget. She donated $1.4 million in her estate to the University of Kansas to be split between a scholarship fund for needy students, especially those from Joplin, Missouri and Eureka, Kansas, and an endowment to the KU Libraries.
