"Depiction of the Nine Phases" scroll
Overview
Taniguchi Gessō (1774-1865), a Japanese artist during the Edo period, was born in Mie prefecture, Japan. He studied painting under Tanke Gessen (丹家月僊). He depicted landscapes, portraits, and flowers and birds (Kachō-ga) in his paintings. This scroll, the Depiction of the Nine Phases, which has a Buddhist theme, shows the nine stages of decomposition of the human body after death.

Top right, in two lines, reads:
業障消滅ノ寫 (Gōshō shōmetsu no sha, i.e., Picture to pry for eliminating evil karma)
九想圖 (Kusōzu, i.e., Depiction of the Nine Phases)
Top left, the left line reads:
石川氏寄附 (Ishikawa-shi kifu, i.e., Donated by Mr. Ishikawa)
承誉具 (Shō o uku no gu, i.e., Material which received good reputations).
