Overview

Taniguchi Gessō (1774-1865), a Japanese artist during the Edo period, was born in Mie prefecture, Japan. He studied painting under Tanke Gessen (丹家月僊). He depicted landscapes, portraits, and flowers and birds (Kachō-ga) in his paintings. This scroll, the Depiction of the Nine Phases, which has a Buddhist theme, shows the nine stages of decomposition of the human body after death.

Scope and Contents

There are several lines written in Japanese found at the top of the scroll.

Top right, in two lines, reads: 業障消滅ノ寫 (Gōshō shōmetsu no sha, i.e., Picture to pry for eliminating evil karma) 九想圖 (Kusōzu, i.e., Depiction of the Nine Phases)

Top left, the left line reads: 石川氏寄附 (Ishikawa-shi kifu, i.e., Donated by Mr. Ishikawa) 承誉具 (Shō o uku no gu, i.e., Material which received good reputations).
